are trends the new classics?

so i was talking to a few of my bests today and they were saying i needed to deal with some more "classic" clothing situations.  

this got me thinking, are trends the new classics?

for example, when trench coats first came out, weren't they a trend? now they're a staple. another example is the black pencil skirt.  for this to become a classic, pencil skirts had to be in style first.

so i think that all classics are the aftermaths of various trends.

anyways, let me know what you think about this "classic" situation.
